The Adelaide House
YWCA's Adelaide House, which is located in Oshawa, is the only home of its kind in Durham Region and services clients from the Durham/Scarborough border, Port Perry and as far east as Port Hope. It provides a safe, affordable place for women getting their lives back on track after leaving abusive situations.
The YWCA initiated an "Adopt a Room" program where local business' and residents took on the task of furnishing and decorating these rooms. Each room had a bed, beaten up dresser and the rest was up to us.
Jenny's family (husband, mother and two daughters) decided to adopt a room in this amazing building. As well, Jenny helped with the Power of Women Exchange group, which adopted three other rooms. It was a fantastic experience that her whole family enjoyed.
Jenny put out the message to family and friends that Adelaide House was looking for donations of furniture, bedding, towels, and more. The response was overwhelming, and what she could not use in her room, was donated to Adelaide House for future use. One particular item, an antique desk, added extra special value to the space. The desk was donated by a woman who had stayed at Adelaide House years before. Please read her letter that follows. The desk fits beautifully in the space, and adds heart and courage to the room.
Let's Get Organized Project
This project was part of a "Let's Get Organized" Contest with Metroland Newspapers. Residents in the Durham Region were invited to send in their photos of their worst room in their house, and why they need help organizing it. Members of the Professional Organizers in Canada, Durham Chapter ran this contest and chose two winners. Working in teams, they were able to turn one homeowners cluttered basement into a functional rec room and storage area. The other winner had her home office transformed. Jenny McKee was involved in the basement team, and as you can see by the homeowner's letter, he was more than pleased with the results.
